The Academy of Journalism and Media, part of the Neuchâtel University (Switzerland) organized today May 24, 2013, a conference titled “Fighting for Transparency: Lost Battle or Mission to Accomplish?”

The conference objectives were:

“The conference will focus on free access to information and on its political, economic and social implications. The Wikileaks case spawned a hype of scale around the concepts of open data. Even though it has been absent from the radar screens during a certain period, the theme remains topical as demonstrated by the recent case of Offshore Leaks. The relevance of the subject is further sustained by the importance that data are taking on a daily basis. Thus, the day will be an opportunity to consider attitude and practices of the different actors involved, to explore the new challenges for the business of journalism as well as to assess the impacts, both on economic and political terms, that open data can have on the whole society.

By gathering some prominent journalists, policy makers, politicians, opinion leaders and academics, this symposium will fuel the exchange of ideas regarding transparency and will advance knowledge about new frontiers in journalism, its impact and its challenges in the era of open information. Through discussions from various round tables, our speakers will discuss the interactions they have with economic, media and government actors. Finally, a clear contribution in terms of development of research in the area is expected at the end of the day.”

Kristinn Hrafnsson, WikiLeaks spokesperson, was invited to make a keynote, and presented also the conclusion of the day’s works.
